Mosquito Control TIPS

Mosquitoes_Water

Homeowners can be pro-active to help control mosquitos around their homes. Here are some simple things you can do to help reduce mosquito breeding condition and reduce the population of mosquitoes:

  • Empty planters or any container that can hold stagnant water. Mosquitoes breed in undisturbed water.
  • Change and/or maintain the water in ornamental ponds, birdbaths, wading pools, etc.
  • Reduce litter and debris in your yard.
  • Cover any openings on standing water sources with fine mesh screening: rainbarrels, catchbasins, even septic tanks
  • Clean your gutters in the spring and fall and check them throughout the summer. A clogged gutter is a perfect breeding ground…stagnant water that is high up and totally undisturbed.
  • Fill in with sand: tree holes, any rotten stumps (remove as much dead wood as you can,) holes or natural depressions in your yard or gardens. Sand helps absorb water and dries quickly after rainfall.
  • Treat pools regularly with chlorine to deter egg-laying mosquitoes.
  • Drain water from backyard play sets. Don’t forget the awnings.
  • Drill holes in the bottom of plastic chairs and tire swings to help with drainage.
  • Water lawns and gardens sparingly and avoid leaving puddles on the ground.
  • Mow your lawn and cut down any high grass. Tall grass retains moisture and creates shady areas where mosquitoes like to rest.
